Scott Calabrese Gets Win #1, Women's Soccer Sweeps in Arizona

Knight Shift

Here's a quick update on your UCF Knights in soccer and volleyball action this weekend:

Men's Soccer: Calabrese Gets Win #1, Pyysalo Gets Hat Trick at JU

After their home opener got scrubbed due to awful weather, the UCF Men's Soccer team picked up its first win under new head coach Scott Calabrese at Jacksonville, thanks to a 4-0 demolition of the Dolphins.

Matias Pyysalo picked up his first career hat trick - the first for a UCF player since Deshorn Brown in 2012 - and freshman keeper Yannick Oetti recorded his first career shutout.

The Knights (1-2) head up to Morgantown, West Virginia to face the Mountaineers on Saturday. The new date for the home opener at the UCF Track and Soccer Complex is scheduled for Tuesday, September 12, against Coach Calabrese's old squad, FIU.

Women's Soccer: Knights Sweep Arizona AND Arizona State

The 24th-ranked Women's Soccer team swept their Tempe, Arizona road swing against two Pac-12 opponents, knocking off both Arizona and Arizona State by the score of 2-1.

Friday night, Kayla Adamek (78') and Madison Murnin (85') scored two late goals to lift the Knights past Arizona in Tempe. The Knights peppered the Wildcats' goal with 16 shots in the second half alone.

Then, the Knights duplicated the feat against the Arizona State on Sunday, but with decidedly less drama. Dina Orschmann (47') and Morgan Ferrara (55') each picked up their second goals of the year, as Vera Varis and Chloe N'Gazi again split time in goal, as they did against the Wildcats.

Last year, Arizona had an RPI ranking of 71, and Arizona State was at 146. However, Arizona was receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Top 25 ballot.

The Knights (4-1) face LSU at home on Friday, assuming the weather holds up.

Volleyball: 2-1 Tournament Puts Knights at 3-3

Back in the Sunshine State after their season-opening trip out to Colorado, UCF Volleyball notched two victories in Fort Myers over the weekend.

On Friday, UCF knocked off both FAU and hosts Florida Gulf Coast in four sets.

Against the Owls, UCF hit .305 as a team, led by 18 kills and 11 digs from Kia Bright, plus 12 more kills and three blocks from Taylor Wickey.

Then, against FGCU, it was freshman Kristina Fisher who led the way with 16 kills to go with Bright's 15 and 14 digs.

Erin Olson and Miranda Watkins combined for 48 and 47 assists on the day, respectively.

Coach Dagenais after the FGCU match:

The Knights fell to Miami (receiving votes in coaches' poll) in three in their third match of the weekend on Saturday. Bright and Fisher had nine kills each.

UCF is back on the road this week in Conway, Arkansas to face Southern, Arkansas State and Central Arkansas in the Central Arkansas Classic Friday and Saturday.
