UCF Men’s Hoops Off to 3-1 Start

Can Johnny Dawkins’ squad keep up the momentum?

NCAA Basketball: Central Florida Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

There were a ton of questions coming off of last year’s NCAA Tournament run. Eleven of the players on the 2019/2020 roster had never played a game for UCF prior to this season. While there is still a ton of work to be done, UCF has had a successful start to the season, winning three of their first four games.

The Games

  • vs. Prairie View (2-5, RPI: 291) - W 73 - 69
  • vs. Miami (4-2, RPI: 73) - L 70 - 79
  • @ Illinois State (2-3, RPI: 143) - W 67 - 65
  • vs. Charleston (3-2, RPI: 126) - W 72 - 71

The Stars

Collin Smith, F

This has really become Collin Smith’s team. The junior forward who transferred to UCF from George Washington after the 2016/2017 season has easily become UCF’s most important player. Through four games, he’s UCF’s leader in points per game, rebounds per game, and field goal percentage.

Dazon Ingram, PG

The Crimson Tide grad transfer is settling in nicely in Johnny Dawkins’ system. Through four games, he’s averaging 30.0 minutes, 10.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists all while shooting 50%. His production will be one of the most integral parts of UCF’s success for the rest of the season.

Frank Bertz, SG

Nobody hustles on the court more than senior guard Frank Bertz. His playing time has more than doubled from last season and it’s been well earned. His specialty is the three ball and he leads UCF with 40% made from beyond the arch.

Darin Green Jr, SG

The true freshman guard has really made a splash on the court in his short career at UCF. He leads the team in three-pointers made while averaging just 20.0 minutes per game. Dare I say we may have Matt Williams 2.0 on our hands!

Up Next

UCF travels to Anaheim, California for the Wooden Legacy Tournament where they’ll start off against Penn (3-2, RPI: 42) on Thanksgiving. Arizona, Charleston, Wake Forest, Long Beach State, Providence, and Pepperdine are all part of the tournament as well.
