UCF Knights RB Bentavious Thompson is no longer on the team, according to head coach Gus Malzahn, who confirmed the news in his first press conference of the summer on Tuesday. No immediate reason was given as to why.

Jason Beede of 247Sports first noticed Thompson’s absence from UCF’s roster on Monday.

Thompson was a favorite to start for UCF in the backfield heading into this season. The senior from Miami had amassed 1,136 career rushing yards and 13 TDs in his three years at UCF.

His best game was last year at USF, when he ran for 110 yards on just 16 carries and scored twice. But he only ran for 382 yards in 2020 after a 530 yard, 8 TD campaign in 2019. Still, he was expected to carry a significant load.

UCF’s backfield remains chock-full of talent, with returnees R.J. Harvey, Demarius Good, Trillion Coles and Johnny Richardson flanked by incoming transfers Mark-Antony Richards and Isaiah Bowser.
