Marrie Mattel
Mattel defeated two top-80 opponents on her way to the Final Four of the USTA Fall Collegiate Classic.
Mattel beat the tournament’s No. 5-8 seed Alana Smith and No. 9-16 seed Daevenia Achong on day one, then played two matches inside the main draw on day two. She beat Virginia’s Sofia Munera in her first matchup of the day 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the Final Four of the tournament.
In that match, she faced the NCAA singles champion Estela Perez-Somarriba of Miami, but fell 6-2, 6-1 to end her tournament. It was a great run by the sophomore out of France who was the American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.
