As the UCF Knights’ Track and Field team begins its Big 12 era, it is also the beginning of the end for a crop of athletes that has helped lead the program to four straight conference titles and get it back to the national stage.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Knights for their 2024 Indoor and Outdoor campaigns:

Last Season

Indoor and Outdoor AAC Champions; 8 athletes (across 6 events) at NCAA Outdoor Championships

The Knights ended their time in the American Athletic Conference on a high note, once again winning both the Indoor and Outdoor titles.

Additionally, another group of athletes earned their way to the NCAA Outdoor Championship, with Rayniah Jones making her third consecutive 100-meter hurdles final appearance and Asherah Collins setting a new program record in the triple jump, but falling just two centimeters short of the Final. Still, both athletes came away with Second-Team All-American honors.

This Season

While it is the first year for the Knights in the Big 12, it will be the last for senior Rayniah Jones and other athletes who ushered in the program’s successes under head coach Dana Boone.

“At the end of the day, we all love UCF and we all love being here, we all love this environment and nobody wants to lose what we built,” Boone said. “So, that’s the motivation. That’s the focus.”

Who’s in Charge

Dana Boone - 6th season

The head of the AAC’s Coaching Staff of the Year for the fourth consecutive time, Dana Boone makes a grand return to the Big 12 in 2024. Before arriving in Orlando in 2018, Boone served as an Associate Head Coach at Texas Tech for three seasons.

Along for the ride are a pair of new hires: Bryan Harmon will coach the distance runners and Jasmyne Graham will assist Boone with the sprinters and hurdlers.

Athletes to Watch

Rayniah Jones (Sprinter)

The defining athlete of the Dana Boone era will have one final chance to claim an individual NCAA Championship in the 100-meter hurdles. A feat that has only gotten more difficult as the years have passed.

Last year, Jones set a new program record in the event and became the third Knight ever to make a Final in three consecutive seasons.

“She’s training about as well as I could ask her to train this fall, so I’m excited,” Boone said.

Asherah Collins (Jumper)

While Collins has been joining Jones at the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the last three seasons, 2023 proved to be her breakout year. She finished the highest any UCF field athlete has ever finished in a decade and came within two centimeters of the Triple Jump Final after setting a new program record.

Her NCAA Championship performances have steadily improved with every appearance, and 2024 will serve as her fourth chance.

Kiah Williams (Sprinter)

A mainstay in the 400-meter hurdles, Kiah Williams broke out in 2023 to become the first UCF athlete to make the NCAA Championship in the event.

Latasha Smith (Sprinter)

She holds three UCF program records (the Indoor 400-meter dash, the outdoor 400-meter dash, and the outdoor 200-meter dash), six AAC Championship gold medals and is the only UCF athlete not named Rayniah Jones to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championship in the Boone era.

Yet, fate has robbed Latasha Smith, via both illness and injury, from ever making an NCAA Outdoor Championship. 2024 will be the West Palm Beach native’s last chance to do so.

Isabella Richardson (Distance)

The New Zealand native has led the way for the UCF Cross Country team, and last track season she ran the fastest indoor 3K in program history since Anne-Marie Blaney, capturing the freshman record for the event in the process.

Charlotte Crook (Distance)

After missing last season due to injury, the UCF outdoor 1500-meter run record holder Charlotte Crook is back for one last season as the team’s lone fifth-year runner.

Who We’ll Miss

Jasmine Scott-Kilgo (Jumper)

She saved the best for her last season. Scott-Kilgo held the program’s Long Jump record for nearly two months before Asherah Collins edged her out in the NCAA Outdoor Championship. Speaking of the Championship, Scott-Kilgo made her first NCAA Championship last season in the Ling Jump, becoming the first Knight to make it there for the event since 2014.

Adrienne Adams (Thrower)

Part of the UCF field athlete renaissance of 2023, Adams has set the program discus throw record three times in her time as a Knight.

Adams elected to enter the transfer portal as a graduate student and has announced she will be transferring to Auburn.

Beyonce Defreitas (Sprinter)

Another one that saved her best for her last season, Defreitas broke out as an individual in 2023 to make it into the Top 5 in program history in the outdoor 100-meter dash, the indoor 200-meter dash and the outdoor 200-meter dash. She is also on two of the top three fastest 4x100-meter relay teams in program history.

However, she has also helped the 4x100-meter relay team qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championship three times (2019, 2022 and 2023).

Who’s New That’s Good

Adaobi Tabugbo (Sprinter)

A transfer from BYU, Tabugo served as the opening runner for the Cougars’ 4x100-meter relay team, which set a program record to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in 2023. She has also competed in the 60-meter dash and hurdles and the 200-meter dash in indoor seasons and the 100-meter dash and hurdles and the 200-meter dash in outdoor seasons.

The Last Time...

UCF had a distance runner in an NCAA Championship: 2017. No distance runner since Anne-Marie Blaney in the 2017 Indoor Championship has made it to an NCAA Track and Field Championship.

UCF had an event national champion: 2013. It’s now been over a decade since Aurieyall Scott’s Indoor 60-meter dash title in 2013.
