Women’s Soccer Will Be Sweating It Out on Selection Monday for NCAA Bid

UCF Women Soccer Loses 4-1 to BYU at Big 12 Semi-Final

Noah Goldberg

UCF Knights Women’s Soccer’s inaugural Big 12 Championship run came to an end on Wednesday night after losing to #7 BYU, 4-1. The Knights have dealt with injuries all season and were without Chloe Netzel, who scored the game-winning goal on Monday night’s win over TCU due to food poisoning.

BYU will play Texas in the Big 12 championship match. Both teams along with Texas Tech are likely locks for the NCAA Tournament.

The Knights (10-7-1, 5-4-1 Big 12) now must wait until Selection Monday at 4pm to find out if the season will extend into the NCAA Tournament or come to an end.

Going into the Big 12 Tournament, UCF entered with a 46 RPI and the #6 seed against the #3 seed TCU. In a back-and-forth affair, UCF won a wild 3-2 game on Netzel’s game-winning goal.

The win gave the Knights a signature win that was missing from the resume, but will it be enough?

Here is a breakdown of the pros and cons of UCF’s resume that includes their best wins, which are defined as wins against the top 50 RPI teams. We also include the schedule strength ranking, the RPI, and the KPI, which is a new ranking tool the committee can use this year.

The following 15 teams figure to be in the mix for the last 10 spots in the NCAA Tournament:

UCF hopes the win against TCU, A Draw against against the top ten ranked Big 12 regular season champion Texas Tech will be enough to get in. But it very likely that the Knights will be either one of the last couple of teams in the NCAA Tournament or one of the first four teams left out, which will depend on the following questions on Monday.

  • Does Pepperdine get in as 3rd WCC Team?
  • Does James Madison get in as a 3rd Sun Belt team?
  • Does SMU get in as a 2nd AAC team?
  • Do both UConn and Providence get In ?
  • Does Arizona State get in despite losing last 4 matches?

UCF needs it least 2 if not 3 of these answers to be a No. The Knights hope the results will help them and not burst their bubble.
